A young faculty member at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, he is also an active young cellist and chamber musician on the concert stage. He holds a strong professional background, graduating with a Master of Music in Cello Performance from Ithaca College in the United States and earning a Performer Diploma from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. His talent has won international recognition, including selection for the Young Musicians Development Program in Hamburg, Germany. He has gained rich orchestral experience as Principal Cellist of the Ithaca Youth Symphony Orchestra and as a cellist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil). He studied under renowned cellists at home and abroad, including Professor Li Jiwu, Professor Elizabeth Simkin, Professor Peter Stumpf, and Professor Wen-Sinn Yang.
Pan Yan has won numerous honours at major competitions in China and abroad, including the highest award in the Youth Group of the 6th National Cello Competition organized by the Chinese Ministry of Culture; first prize in the Piano Trio category at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in Australia, as a member of the Nibbana Trio — the first Chinese ensemble to win this award at this top-tier international competition; and first prize at the Ithaca Concerto Competition in the United States. As a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral principal, he has performed at major concert halls around the world, including Lincoln Center in New York, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Xinghai Concert Hall in Guangzhou, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the Melbourne Recital Centre in Australia, and the Indiana University Musical Arts Center in the United States.
In his artistic exploration, Pan Yan has built an extensive repertoire across chamber, solo, and symphonic works, and is dedicated to promoting outstanding modern and contemporary music. He has given the Chinese premieres of cello solo or ensemble works by composers including Britten, Offenbach, Tcherepnin, Tschintsadze, Servais, and Rita Strohl.
